Teeth Whitening

Dentist-supervised tooth whitening safely lightens the color of the teeth and gives you a younger appearance. If you have very sensitive teeth, periodontal disease, or teeth with worn enamel, Dr. Alexander may discourage bleaching. If you are one of the millions of people who are good candidates for tooth whitening, Dr. Alexander will recommend one of two methods, depending on your circumstances and objectives. He will prescribe either an in-office whitening system done while you sit in the dental chair (for one session of about an hour), or he will recommend a dentist-supervised at-home whitening method. When your teeth reach the desired level of brightness, you will likely need only occasional treatment to maintain your brighter smile.

The at-home process involves wearing lightweight bleaching trays (one upper and one lower) that are custom made to fit over your teeth. We give you a bleaching gel and show you how to apply it to the inside of the trays. We will also provide instructions on how long to wear the trays each day (up to any hour) and for how many days (often 1 to 2 weeks).  Our results have proven to be successful with both methods, however many patients have found our in office system time saving and convenient.

Whitening is successful in at least 90 percent of patients. If your teeth have gray stains caused by fluorosis, smoking or tetracycline, results may not be as dramatic as when the stains are yellow, brown or orange due to common factors–coffee, tea, wine, smoking and general aging.
